# problem
Airbnb 3 problem had 3** clear, direct, indisputable** statements. They were:
- Price is an important point for customers booking travel online/
- hotels leave you diconnected from the city and its culture
- no easy ways exists to book a room with local or become a host.
Comment: founders can overcrowd with too many details if they know the niche deeply to show off. Don't do that. If you come across as too much of ane xterp, you may also get over-grilled on it by the investors. Think PhD quals: JUst say things you can not be questioned on.
# solution
- Comment: The problem stated need to be tackled with a solution. They asnwered the solutuon in three statements:
Solution: A web platform where users can rent space to host travelers to:
1. save money when traveling
2. make money when hosting
3. share culture (local connection to the city)
- Another Comment:
- Note that there is no direct addressing of the 3 problems in each point. But does it do that?
- Also note that compex jargon; iterate over and over to make this simple enough to answer in one sentence. when your grandma gets it, its done.
# market validation
Airbnb had to demonstrate that this is a valid product; this is to demonstrate that people are willing to move away from hotel bookins. They used Craiglist and Couchsrufing as examples in the following ways:
- CL shows many people are renting out their spaces. Issues of CL is poor user experience and not exactly for short term stays.
- CS shows many people are also willing to stay in people's homes/shred spaces at a cheaper price point than hotels.
Both points demonstrate the problem exists and the validity of the solution.
# market size
This slide shows the following:
- Total Available Market (TAM): 2 Billion+ tripes booked worldwide
- Serviceable Available Market (SAM): here, they took the budget/online portion of the TAM. 560 million.
- Airbnb Market Share: 15% of SAM; 84 million.
Comments: 15-20% is apparently a bold statement. With 2 million+ guests every night, it appears that they smashed that target. By a factor o 10 as thata is 730 million tips, annually.
# product
Screenshots of the product/website. Straightforward for Airbnb. Straightforward Howler.
# business model
- Airbnb model: 10% commission on each transaction.
- They also show:
- number of trips: 84 million
- average commission: $25 if a single trip generates $250 (this assumes $80/night for 3 nights).
- Revenue: $200 million by 2011.
# market adoption
This is also called go-to-market slide. For airbnb:
- **events**: like octoberfest; eurors; worldcup; conferences
- **partnerships** with travel companies online like kayak, goloco, etc.
- **craigslist**: enable a dual posting feature.
The CL one seems like the best idea because it autoposts. Can I do something like this for Howler or SpaceHQ?
# competition
Airbnb showed a chart with offline/online (binary) on x-axis and affordable/expensive on the y axis. This put airbnb on te affordable and online quadrant whereas competitors were in the other sections.
# competitive advantages
airbnb showed 6 things here:
- **first to market**: for transaction-based temp housing site
- **ease of use**:
- ease of searching by dates, location, and price.
- 3 click booking
- **profiles**: profiles of hosts/visitors.
- **list once**: hosts post once on airbnb but everyday on CL. basically, this is automation and a great convenience feature.
- **design and brand**: memorable name will launch at Dem National Convention to gain mindshare
- **host incentive** make money for hosts which couchsurfing doesn't allow.
# team
- Just show core-team and founders.
- Comments:
- Advisors are useless here unless relevant to the space.
- demonstrate that the tams had the capacity to bring the business to its next fundable point.
# press
Reviews from media, if any.
# user testimonials
Reviews from users, if any.
# financial
