In Manufacturing Consent, there is a discussion between Chomsky and Foucault and the following is a bit that I found interesting that links to creativity. Chomsky says that language unfolds in the human brain because it is a program embedded in the brain. Living in a certain place unpacks that program. He goes on to say that he thinks this is true of other faculties and abilities of human intelligence, understanding, and interpretation as well as aesthetic and moral judgment. He also believes that need to be creative without the arbitrary constraints from institutions is a fundamental element of human nature- therefore creativity is internal and so are its constraints. Foucault, on the other hand, believes there are also external constraints. Most interestingly, I made note that both believe creativity thrives in a rule-based system- internal v/s external ones. I assume this means they see rules as equivalent to constraints.
